Winter storm live updates: Nearly 300,000 without power


As of Sunday morning, more than 190 million Americans were on winter weather alerts from New Mexico out to North Carolina and up to Maine.

Winter Storm Fern continues to churn across the South with snow, sleet and freezing rain spread across a wide chunk of the region. Snow was beginning to creep into the Northeast as of Sunday morning.

The storm is forecast to move east through Sunday morning, bringing snow from Wichita, Kan., to Cincinnati. The first flakes of snow will also begin to fall in Washington, D.C., on Sunday morning and Philadelphia by around 7 a.m. ET.

Freezing rain will be possible by sunrise in Shreveport, La., Memphis, Ala., Atlanta, and Raleigh, N.C.

Through the morning, places west of the Mississippi River are expected to dry out as the winter storm tracks northeast.

New York City is forecast to see snow later in the morning, while warm air is expected to creep north and change the snow in Washington, D.C., to a wintry mix.

Between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. ET, a band of heavy snow and wintry mix is forecast to affect the I-95 corridor. This could lead to snowfall rates of up to an inch per hour. Philadelphia is expected to see a wintry mix or freezing rain by this point, while New York City and areas to the north are forecast to also see snow.

Up until 6 p.m. ET, warm air is expected to creep onshore toward the I-95 corridor, which may result in a mix of snow, wintry mix, freezing rain and rain. This could also mean heavy bands of snow for New England.

By around 9 p.m. ET on Sunday, New York City is forecast to experience a wintry mix, while New England and the interior Northeast are expected to see more snow.

Light snow is expected to linger into Monday morning, forecast to end by around noon.
