Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Saturday performed Tarpan to pay homage to his ancestors on the occasion of Pitru Visarjan Amavasya, marking the concluding day of Pitru Paksha.
According to the Chief Minister’s Office, Dhami said that ancestors form the foundation of society’s roots, values and traditions, adding that expressing reverence and gratitude towards them is an integral part of Sanatan tradition.
“Ancestors are the foundation of our roots, values and traditions. Expressing reverence, gratitude and respect towards them is an integral part of our Sanatan tradition,” the Chief Minister said.
He also prayed that the affection, spiritual blessings and grace of ancestors would continue to guide everyone.
Pitru Paksha is a 16-day period in the Hindu lunar calendar during which devotees pay homage to their ancestors through rituals such as Tarpan and Pind Daan. Pitru Visarjan Amavasya, also known as Sarva Pitru Amavasya or Mahalaya Amavasya, marks the culmination of the period.
Across the country, devotees observed the occasion by performing religious rituals and offering prayers for the peace and salvation of their ancestors.
In Bihar, a large number of devotees traditionally gather in Gaya to perform Pind Daan and take a holy dip in the Falgu River on the concluding day of Pitru Paksha.
In Tamil Nadu, thousands of devotees gathered along the ghats of the Cauvery River in Srirangam, Tiruchirappalli, to take holy dips and perform ancestral rites on Mahalaya Amavasya.
Devotees arrived from several districts, including Tiruchirappalli, Thanjavur, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Pudukkottai and Karaikudi. After performing the rituals, many visited the Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple in Srirangam, the Thiruvanaikaval Jambukeswarar Temple and the Samayapuram Mariamman Temple to offer prayers.
In Rameswaram, thousands of devotees took holy dips in the sea at Agni Theertha and performed rituals, including Tarpanam, to honour their ancestors.
Mahalaya Amavasya marks the end of Pitru Paksha and is followed by Devi Paksha, which heralds the beginning of the festive period associated with Goddess Durga and the Durga Puja celebrations.
