Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Ayush and Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Prataprao Jadhav on Wednesday urged citizens to make preventive healthcare part of their Dhanteras celebrations, saying good health and well-being are the foundations of lasting prosperity.
The Minister encouraged families to adopt healthier habits, prioritise disease prevention and invest in their long-term health.
Jadhav said that while Dhanteras is traditionally associated with buying gold, silver and household items, families should give equal importance to safeguarding their health.
The festival, also associated with Dhanvantari Jayanti, commemorates the emergence of Lord Dhanvantari during the Samudra Manthan. Revered as the divine physician and closely associated with Ayurveda, Dhanvantari represents the importance of health in individual and family well-being.
The Minister said healthcare discussions often begin after illness develops, while greater attention should also be given to prevention. Referring to the Ayurvedic principle “Swasthasya Swasthya Rakshanam”, or preserving the health of healthy individuals, he highlighted its relevance amid rising concerns over non-communicable diseases, sedentary lifestyles and stress.
He encouraged balanced nutrition, regular physical activity, adequate sleep and stress management. Families should promote nutritious, home-cooked meals, limit excessive junk food consumption and ensure appropriate care for elderly members, he said.
Jadhav also highlighted regular yoga practice and timely health screenings as components of preventive healthcare.
He said Ayushman Arogya Mandirs were helping expand access to Ayush-based services at the community level. Scientific research, quality standards and evidence-based practices were essential to ensuring that traditional systems of medicine contributed responsibly to healthcare, he added.
Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Fit India vision, Jadhav said small, meaningful lifestyle changes could help prevent lifestyle-related diseases. A healthier population would also be central to achieving Viksit Bharat 2047, he said.
The Minister urged every citizen to adopt at least one positive health habit and encourage another family member to do the same. He also called for greater attention to the health of older people, women and children, timely medical advice and a shared family commitment to healthy living.
Citizens should look beyond material symbols of prosperity and make preventive healthcare part of their families’ future, he said, reiterating that “Health is the Greatest Wealth.”
