Wharmby’s conversation with a police officer was recorded after staff at the Kent hospital alerted them to what happened.
He initially told police he had woken up at 04:00 to give Hunter some Calpol and give him his bottle.
Wharmby said he then woke up about half an hour later to the baby “screaming” with a swollen back of the head.
“I took him into his mum, we called an ambulance and now we are here,” he added.
Wharmby was arrested later that same day.
“This was a deeply distressing case,” said Det Insp Adam Marshall.
“Throughout this lengthy and incredibly difficult process, Hunter’s loved ones have shown remarkable courage and strength.
“Despite their immense grief, they provided vital evidence and remained steadfast in their support of the investigation.
“Our thoughts remain with them as they continue to come to terms with their loss.”
