The Ministry of Defence (MoD) on Wednesday signed a contract worth approximately ₹770 crore with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) to procure Improved Low Level Light Weight Radars for the Indian Army.
The contract was signed in New Delhi in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh.
The radar system can detect and track fighter-sized aerial targets as well as mini and micro drones. It can also prioritise aerial targets, strengthening the Army’s ability to counter threats from unmanned aerial systems.
The ministry said the procurement marks a significant step towards the indigenisation of air defence platforms and will boost India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem, including micro, small and medium enterprises.
Aligned with the government’s Viksit Bharat @2047 vision, the procurement will support efforts to build a resilient, self-reliant and globally competitive defence industry, it added.
