Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Canada on December 11-12, the Indian High Commission in Ottawa announced on Friday, following a telephone conversation with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation across key sectors.
In a post on X, the High Commission confirmed the visit and said both leaders had agreed to build on the positive momentum in India-Canada relations, with a focus on achieving concrete outcomes in trade, energy, technology, security and people-to-people exchanges.
“Hon’ble PM Shri Narendra Modi will visit Canada on 11–12 December 2026,” the High Commission said.
During their telephone conversation on Tuesday, PM Modi and Carney reaffirmed their commitment to advancing the India-Canada strategic partnership.
“Had a warm and productive conversation with Prime Minister Mark Carney. We agreed to build on the positive momentum in India-Canada ties and work towards concrete outcomes across key areas of our Strategic Partnership, including trade, energy, technology, security and people-to-people ties,” PM Modi posted on X.
“Together, India and Canada are contributing towards a more stable and prosperous world,” he added.
According to a statement from the Canadian Prime Minister’s Office, the two leaders reiterated their commitment to concluding negotiations on a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) at the earliest opportunity, as part of efforts to double bilateral trade by 2030.
They also welcomed the Team Canada Trade Mission to India, led by Canadian Minister of International Trade Maninder Sidhu, and Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand’s visit to New Delhi to advance shared priorities.
The leaders discussed the impact of geopolitical instability on the Indo-Pacific region and the importance of cooperation among trusted partners in energy and agriculture.
Carney also thanked PM Modi for his leadership in seeking a peaceful resolution to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Both leaders agreed to remain in close contact ahead of the Prime Minister’s December visit.
Meanwhile, Anand met PM Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in New Delhi on Wednesday, with discussions focusing on expanding cooperation in trade, investment, security, energy, technology and people-to-people exchanges.
Following her meeting with PM Modi, Anand highlighted the potential for deeper economic and strategic engagement between the two countries.
“Canada and India have enormous potential to shape a more prosperous future, together. I had the opportunity to meet with Prime Minister @narendramodi in New Delhi today to discuss our strategic partnership and the opportunities ahead for trade, investment and security,” she posted on X.
Anand also underscored the longstanding people-to-people ties between India and Canada, noting that nearly eight decades of diplomatic relations had been strengthened by generations of families, students and entrepreneurs.
In a separate post, the Canadian Foreign Minister expressed satisfaction with the progress made since her meeting with Jaishankar in New Delhi a year earlier, particularly in trade negotiations and cooperation in energy, innovation and security.
“Exactly one year ago, in New Delhi, I met my counterpart,@DrSJaishankar, to establish a common roadmap for relations between Canada and India. Returning today, I am encouraged by the progress made, whether in trade negotiations or in strengthening our cooperation on energy, innovation, and security,” she said.
Anand added that strengthening bilateral ties amid changes in the international order could help both countries build a more prosperous future and contribute to a free, open and prosperous Indo-Pacific.
Separately, Sidhu is leading a delegation of approximately 300 business representatives to India under the Team Canada Trade Mission to explore commercial opportunities across key sectors.
Both countries are seeking to accelerate CEPA negotiations and expand bilateral trade and investment, with PM Modi’s upcoming visit expected to provide further momentum to the relationship.
