The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has conducted the maiden live jump of the indigenously developed Advanced High-Altitude Parachute (AHAP) at Nyoma (Mudh DZ) in Ladakh, demonstrating its operational capability in challenging high-altitude terrain.
The jump was executed from an altitude of 16,000 feet above mean sea level (AMSL), with the parachute deployed at 15,500 feet. The landing was carried out at Nyoma (Mudh DZ), located at an altitude of 13,700 feet, the Ministry of Defence said in a press release on Tuesday.
The successful jump demonstrated the efficacy and tactical employability of the AHAP system in extremely high-altitude conditions, the release said.
The AHAP has been designed and developed by DRDO’s Aerial Delivery Research and Development Establishment (ADRDE), Agra, as a static-line parachute system for the mass drop of paratroopers. The system has been manufactured by Ordnance Parachute Factory (OPF), Kanpur, inspected by the Directorate General of Aeronautical Quality Assurance (DGAQA) and certified by the Centre for Military Airworthiness and Certification (CEMILAC), RCMA Kanpur.
The parachute offers multiple deployment modes and an operational altitude range of up to 18,000 feet, with a rate of descent suited to the tactical requirements of the Indian Defence Forces in high-altitude terrain. Static-line parachute jumps at such altitudes pose significant challenges due to high opening shock and rate of descent, the release said.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO, the Defence Forces, DPSUs and industry on the successful maiden live jump of the indigenous parachute system, describing it as another significant step towards Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
Defence Secretary, Secretary, Department of Defence R&D and Chairman, DRDO, Rajesh Kumar Singh, also congratulated the teams involved in the design and development of the AHAP system.
