President Droupadi Murmu on Friday congratulated Indian athletes for their historic medal-winning performances at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games 2026.
President Murmu congratulated Kumkum Mohod, Ankita Bhakat and Kirti Sharma after the Indian women’s recurve team defeated South Korea 5-3 to win the country’s first-ever gold medal in the event at the Asian Games.
In a post on X, the President described the achievement as “a gold to remember”.
She said, “Three archers, one united effort, and a Gold to remember!” The President also said their dedication and commitment would continue to inspire young archers.
President Murmu also congratulated Dhiraj Bommadevara and Kumkum Mohod on winning the silver medal in the mixed recurve team event. She described the achievement as “a proud moment for Indian archery”.
The President said their performance had brought India its first-ever silver medal in the event and wished them success in their future competitions.
Murmu also congratulated boxer Lovlina Borgohain for winning gold in the women’s 75kg category. Lovlina defeated China’s Bao Ziyi 5-0 in the final on Friday, securing the gold medal on her 29th birthday.
Lauding Lovlina’s “strength, precision and determination”, the President said the boxer’s victory had brought immense pride to the country and made the occasion of her birthday even more special.
India also secured a bronze medal in sepaktakraw, with the men’s quadrant team of Malemnganba Singh Sorokhaibam, Ram Kumar Sharma, Bobby Kumar and Akash Yumnam losing 0-2 (12-15, 13-15) to Japan in the semifinal.
The medal is India’s third in sepaktakraw at the Asian Games. India had earlier won bronze in the men’s team regu at the 2018 Jakarta Games and in the women’s team regu at the 2022 edition.
The Indian quadrant had defeated World Cup champions Myanmar in the group stage on its way to the medal.
According to the figures cited in the report, India’s medal tally at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games stood at 72, including 12 gold, 25 silver and 34 bronze medals.
