Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has dismissed concerns that artificial intelligence could trigger an extinction-level event, saying there is “zero percent chance” that AI will lead to the end of the world by 2030.
In an interview with CBS News’ Sunday Morning, Huang rejected predictions of an AI-driven catastrophe and said the claims were contributing to unnecessary fear.
Huang’s comments came after US President Donald Trump also dismissed concerns over the dangers posed by AI as a “hoax”. Trump had earlier made a surprise phone call to Huang while the Nvidia chief was speaking at the All-In Summit.
Huang said the AI industry should continue advancing the technology as quickly as possible, while ensuring that products are safe before they are released.
“We’re going to go as fast as we can, but we would never ever, and never should, ship products before they’re ready,” Huang said, stressing that AI systems should not be deployed if they are unsafe.
The remarks come amid an intensifying debate within the technology industry over the pace of AI development and the potential risks posed by increasingly capable AI systems.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has argued that the pace of AI development should be slowed, warning that advances in AI’s ability to help build the next generation of AI systems could potentially outpace humanity’s ability to understand and control them.
In an essay published on September 12, Amodei referred to the phenomenon as recursive self-improvement and called for the development of increasingly capable AI systems to be pursued with greater caution.
The debate has also drawn attention following the departure of Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon, who publicly cited concerns about companies racing to develop AI systems that could eventually become difficult to control.
Amodei’s concerns have also received support from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis, according to the report.
The contrasting views highlight an ongoing debate in the AI industry between accelerating technological development and addressing potential long-term safety risks.
