Asian Games: Indian women’s trap shooting team wins silver

Indian shooters Neeru Dhanda, Aashima Ahlawat and Manisha Keer won the silver medal in the women’s trap team event at the Asian Games here on Tuesday, taking India’s shooting medal tally to 13.

The Indian trio posted a combined score of 328 after three days of the 125-shot qualification round to secure silver ahead of Kuwait. China won the gold with an aggregate score of 346, while Kuwait took bronze with 325 at the Aichi Prefectural General Shooting Gallery.

Neeru also qualified for the individual final after finishing joint-top in the qualification round with a score of 118. Aashima and Manisha missed out on the final after scoring 106 and 104, respectively, to finish 16th and 23rd.

The men’s trap qualification is also underway, with Kynan Chenai, Shapath Bharadwaj and Azhar Rizvi competing in both the individual qualification and team event.

On Monday, Esha Singh narrowly missed out on gold in the women’s 25m pistol event, settling for silver after a dramatic shoot-off.

Esha and China’s Xiao Jiaruixuan were tied at 38 hits after 50 shots, matching the Asian Games record and forcing a shoot-off for gold. Both shooters hit four of their five targets in the first shoot-off before Xiao prevailed 3-2 in the second to claim the title at the Aichi Prefectural General Shooting Gallery.

The silver was Esha’s second successive Asian Games medal in the women’s 25m pistol. She had also finished runner-up at Hangzhou 2023, where she helped India win the team gold alongside Manu Bhaker and Rhythm Sangwan.

India’s 13 shooting medals include one gold, which came in the mixed 10m air pistol event, where Kamaljeet and Suruchi Singh won the title.

Overall, India have won 46 medals at the ongoing Asian Games — four gold, 21 silver and 21 bronze.
