External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Friday signed the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime, aimed at strengthening global efforts to prevent and combat cybercrime.
“This Convention strengthens international cooperation for a safer digital future,” Jaishankar said in a post on X.
According to the United Nations, the convention is the first comprehensive global treaty on cybercrime and provides countries with a range of measures to prevent and combat such offences.
It also seeks to strengthen international cooperation in the sharing of electronic evidence related to serious crimes.
The UN General Assembly adopted the convention in 2024. It entered into force last year after securing the required threshold of 40 member-state signatures. By the end of 2025, 93 countries had signed the convention.
The UN said the convention addresses technical and legal challenges by adapting traditional criminal investigation methods to the realities of information and communication technologies.
It seeks to address challenges arising from cybercriminals operating across jurisdictions, while law enforcement agencies remain bound by national legal and jurisdictional limits.
The convention also provides for the recovery of proceeds of cybercrime and strengthens cross-border cooperation in investigating offences covered by the treaty as well as other serious crimes.
