An 80-year-old nurse who has cared for patients for 60 years said she “never wanted to do anything else” as she celebrated six decades in the role.
Vibeke Nicklin, from Prenton in Wirral, originally only planned to move from Denmark to the United Kingdom for a year to work as an au pair.
But after meeting her husband Roger, Vibeke decided to stay and has dedicated her life to working in the National Health Service ever since.
“I feel lucky to be healthy, I enjoy my job and always have done, I’ve never wanted to do anything else,” said Vibeke, who still works two overnight shifts each week.
In 1964, a 17-year-old Vibeke moved to the UK while waiting to begin her nurse training – a job she had always dreamed of doing.
After deciding to stay, she has worked in hospitals across the country.
The majority of her years in the profession have been spent at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre and Arrowe Park Hospital.
